JOHN BULLINGTON |
Alamo Drafthouse South
Austin, TX
Chef John Bullington, once well known for his world fusion cuisine at the helm of Mars Restaurant, has spent the last two years boldly altering the American foodscape with the marriage of film and food for the Alamo Drafthouse. The result has been a string of successful feasts melding the food on film with the food on the plate. John’s menus have been inspired by the cuisine of the films' locations such as a six course Russian menu inspired by DR. ZHIVAGO, Six courses of Bedouin delights for LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, six courses of Caribbean food for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and even five courses of interior Mexican cuisine for NACHO LIBRE. The menus are also derived from the food included in the film, which is the basis for two different seven course menus inspired by the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy presented during the course of viewing all three films in one sitting. As a main feature of the Hill Country Food and Wine Festival, John created the menu for the Film Noir-Pinot Noir event which paired a menu with MacMurray Ranch Pinot Noirs for the film Double Indemnity starring Fred MacMurray. The Alamo has also started an Iron Chef series of their own, where the secret ingredient the menu is built upon is the film itself.
Not only does John present the feast series but regularly prepares specials inspired by newly released movies. Lately guests were treated to an all organic menu for FAST FOOD NATION, a smoked food menu for THANK YOU FOR SMOKING and authentic Polish food for the Polish Film Festival.
John was recognized by Citysearch in 2000 as Chef of the Year and has been featured in Texas Monthly, Austin Monthly, The Austin Chronicle, Daily Texan and Austin American Statesman. In addition to the Food and Wine Festival John continues to promote the good will of the Alamo by performing charity work for Communities in Schools, the Austin Food Bank, The Green Corn Project and The Periwinkle Foundation.
